How did Soros Fund Management start?

Soros Fund Management says it was founded by George Soros in 1970. According to Reuters, Jonathan and Robert Soros, the firm's deputy chairmen, told investors in July 2011 that it would return roughly US$1 billion of outside money and become a family office, as the Dodd-Frank Act would force hedge funds to register with regulators; their letter said it would no longer be able to manage assets for anyone other than a family client. The brothers wrote that the firm had effectively operated as a family office, relying on exemptions from registration, since their father reorganised the Quantum fund in 2000. Bloomberg Businessweek wrote that by the end of 2011 the firm would have no outside customers for the first time in 42 years. [1, 2, 3]

CNBC says she joined Soros in 2017 after 25 years at UBS and its predecessor firms, and that she oversees both investment and non-investment staff. The formal roles of Soros family members at the firm today were not confirmed. [4, 5]

How big is Soros Fund Management?

Soros Fund Management states US$28 billion in assets under management in an undated job posting for a summer 2026 internship. In July 2011 Bloomberg Businessweek and Reuters put the money it would manage for George Soros, his family and his foundations at about US$25 billion. The firm also files quarterly Form 13F reports with the SEC; a 13F lists only US-listed stocks and similar securities (such as ETFs, ADRs and listed options) held at the end of a quarter, so it does not give the size of the whole office.
