The FII Institute has postponed the 10th Future Investment Initiative (FII10), Saudi Arabia’s flagship investment conference, from 26 to 29 October 2026 in Riyadh to a date in 2027. It announced the move on 19 October and said new dates would be announced “very soon”. The National reports that the decision follows a series of Houthi missile and drone attacks on the kingdom, including strikes on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport.
It matters because FII is one of the main places where Gulf sovereign funds, global banks and family capital meet. Its delay shows that security now shapes the region’s deal calendar.
What the FII Institute said
Princess Maha bint Mishari Al Saud, the institute’s chief executive, said the landmark 10th edition had to deliver “the full scale, extraordinary quality, and unforgettable impact”. The theme, “The Power of Legacy”, stays. Existing registrations and partnerships remain valid, Gulf Business reports.
The institute’s statement, as quoted by The National and Gulf Business, gave no security reason. The link comes from reporting: on 14 October Reuters, citing two people familiar with the matter, said Saudi Arabia planned a hybrid format so that executives could attend remotely after deadly attacks on Riyadh airport.
Why FII matters to Gulf family capital
The Public Investment Fund (PIF), Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, launched FII in Riyadh in 2017. According to PIF, the FII Institute was set up by royal decree in 2019 and is now a non-profit foundation with an investment arm. The event, nicknamed “Davos in the desert”, draws sovereign funds, global financial institutions, chief executives and officials. The institute says the platform has facilitated and highlighted investments and initiatives worth more than $250 billion.
For a family office, such a forum’s value is access: one week with sovereign funds, bank chiefs and policymakers in one city. A delay pushes those conversations back. Our Saudi Arabia guide covers family offices in the kingdom.
What else was postponed
- Intersec Saudi Arabia, set for 16 to 18 November, moves to October 2027; organiser Messe Frankfurt Saudi Arabia cited “close monitoring of recent developments”.
- Saudi Retail Forum, set for 19 November, moves to March 2027.
- A Saudi-EU summit was also postponed, Reuters reported.
The mood was already cautious. In a Deutsche Bank poll of family office forum guests in Singapore, released on 7 October, only 2% named the Middle East as the most stable region for the next 12 months.
What to watch
- The new FII10 dates, and whether the 2027 edition is fully in person.
- Whether more autumn events in Riyadh are moved.
- Whether Gulf families move meetings or staff to other centres; Saudi Arabia was eighth of nine emerging hubs in a new family office ranking.
A fair caveat
The FII Institute gave quality, not security, as its reason; the link to the attacks comes from news reports. A postponed conference says little on its own about investment flows into the kingdom.
Questions to bring to your advisors
If our deal flow depends on one forum or one city, what is our plan when it is disrupted? How do we weigh security risk in where we hold assets, meet partners and base staff? These are questions to bring to your advisors, not advice.
